Additional information

- The development of a pump with no freely moving parts offers notable benefits in terms of fabrication simplicity, durability, minimal maintenance and absence of contacting valve surfaces. In contrast with traditional pumping methods where cells would be damaged this is the first comprehensive report of blood pumping with minimal erythrocyte lysis via micro-pumps.

- We demonstrate the particular suitability of our novel elastomeric micro-pumps to reliable pumping of complex biological suspensions, exemplified by whole blood.

- We address a topical requirement for biological-suspension compatible components in emerging miniaturised, biological analysis systems.
