English abstract

Based on research in some 100 museums across Europe and interviews with more than 60 cultural policy-makers and museum directors and curators this monograph explores if and how history museums are becoming more transnational or European. It argues that through funding, cooperation and networks the museum space is slowly becoming more European. Narratives of (contemporary) European history are also increasingly extending beyond the nation-state. However, they are becoming more transnational usually without specific references to Europe as a continent let alone the European Union as a political entity. Revised English version New York: Berghahn April 2014 (forthcoming).
