Significance of output:

The temperature in cities is found to be up to 10°C warmer than the surrounding rural areas, which greatly increases the risk of heat waves exceeding the threshold. Accurate modelling of local temperature has never been attempted before due to a few difficulties, e.g. computer resources. We accurately simulated local heat transfer over urban-like obstacles. This provides a guideline for developing simpler models, and details to improve parameterisation schemes in high resolution numerical weather prediction. The work is supported by National Centre for Atmospheric Science, NERC (2007-13, £460k) and CD-acapco (fred.mendonca@uk.cd-adapco.com) through providing software licenses and regular meeting.
