Significance of output:

Major obstacles in utilising lignocellulosic wastes for renewable fuel production include low conversion yields, energy-intensive process steps, and the cost of enzymes. The research targeted high solids operation to minimise energy inputs and water use. Mechanisms blocking enzyme re-use were identified and techniques developed to circumvent these, reducing the requirement for enzyme addition in successive cycles. Overall conversion was increased from 67% to 88%, with a concentrated output stream. The paper was accessed 1000 times in first month, the approach is now being tested at industrial scale in the USA1,2.
