Global citizens: Who are they?
This article is an output of the 2007-2010 Department for International Development Development Awareness Fund project ‘Embedding the Global Citizenship in the Curriculum’ worth £136,000 that was secured and led by the researcher. This article reports upon a quantitative survey completed by 121 students measuring conscientiousness, extraversion, openness; Machiavellianism, prosocial behaviour; self-esteem; skills relating to social action and tolerance and understanding and their concern regarding social problems. This article provided the basis for the development of a ‘Global Learning Attitude Inventory’ by academics at three University’s in the UK, led by the researcher, that is now being used to evaluate the impact of global citizenship initiatives by academic staff at Manchester Metropolitan University, the Institute of Education (London) and NGOs that are members of the Development Education Centre Consortium. The evaluative methods used in this research were presented as a case study of best practice in a national publication Charities Evaluation Services (2011) Evaluating global learning outcomes: A guide to assessing progress in intercultural, environmental and development education projects. Charities Evaluation Services: London.
