Knowledge Building in Online Environments:
Constraining and Enabling Collective Intelligence
The chapter provides a novel analysis for the critical examination of online knowledge building by developing the conceptual frameworks of ‘outsideness’ and the notion of ‘adaptive expertise’. These frameworks, grounded upon a robust, original and critical treatment of the research field, provide the basis for an innovative international case study involving three countries. This chapter therefore offers significant new information that will provide academics with a new context for evaluating online environments so as to ensure optimal engagement within these applied learning contexts for students in Higher Education.
