Discrete Mereotopology for Spatial Reasoning in Automated Histological Image Analysis
<28>This paper, resulting from a collaboration with the Birmingham School of Dentistry, is an example of work initially undertaken in one context finding application in another. In 1999 I introduced a discrete mereotopology, adapting the Region Connection Calculus to discrete space; this was published in the proceedings of COSIT'99. Around ten years later, David Randell began applying this theory, in combination with Mathematical Morphology, to work with Gabriel Landini on histological image analysis. Our ensuing investigations led to further development of discrete mereotopology, with applications to histological image analysis. This paper is the fullest account of this work so far.
