Steve Fothergill has been a Research Professor in the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) since 1992. His relationship with CRESR since that date has involved CRESR buying out 40 per cent of his salary in order to undertake research. He does not have a contract of employment with the University and is not on its payroll. For the other 60% of his time, he is employed as the Director of the Industrial Communities Alliance (ICA), an association of local authorities from Britain’s older industrial areas. As Director of ICA, Fothergill's tasks include undertaking and overseeing research and evidence gathering informing the ICA's national and European campaigns design to regenerate older industrial areas. He has led, and co-managed a substantial number of research projects through CRESR over the last 20 years, often in partnership with Professor Christina Beatty (Cat A). Research undertaken by Fothergill is primarily focused in this submitting unit of assessment and consists of work enhancing the evidence base regarding the long term social and economic evolution of Britain's declining cities and regions. He has been a Principal, or co-applicant, on four successful ESRC grants during his period as Research Professor at CRESR.
