Double-weighted statement

This is the first book-length (c. 95,000 words) study of both American and European screenplays, the first to encompass material from the beginnings of cinema to the present, and only the second to make screenplay texts themselves the principal means of analyzing the history of screenplay form (the first was a study only of Hollywood, from 1930-1969). It draws on extensive original study of primary materials owned by film studios and studied in many different archives in Los Angeles, New York, Washington and London in developing significantly new arguments about screenwriting history and screenplay form.
