Although Cologne ranked among the largest and most prosperous cities in medieval and early modern Europe, traces of its musical culture seem scant. This contribution re-examines the musical patronage of the archbishops and, especially, the endowment of polyphonic music for Cologne Cathedral by Dietrich von Moers, hitherto dismissed as spurious. Through archival research, I traced several copies of the foundation charter (1454) and a rich corpus of accounts, detailing the chantry chapel’s history well into the 16th century. Boasting one of the earliest and best-documented endowments of this kind, Cologne’s status in late-medieval music history can therefore be completely rewritten.
