Michael Nyman: Collected Writings
Critical insights gained from the study of these texts is to be found in ap Siôn’s ‘Introduction pp.1-23’ to the Collected Writings’ – a 10,000 word context-based essay which provides a detailed overview of Nyman’s critical writings, relates his writings to his compositional aesthetic and provides a detailed analysis of the book’s primary thematic areas (‘Early Music’, ‘Modernism’, ‘Quotation’, and so on). A lengthy period of data collection, analysis, editing and research was undertaken in order to bring this volume to light.
Michael Nyman: Collected Writings consist of 95 articles, reviews and interviews drawn from the composer’s writings from 1968–82. Ap Siôn collected, transcribed and edited a substantial body of material for this publication – over 100 texts totalling around 160,000 words. Many of the articles originally appeared in journals of a very recherché nature and were difficult to access. Ap Siôn also discovered previously unpublished materials amongst Nyman’s files and papers, including part of an interview between Nyman and the American composer Steve Reich. References and citations are also provided, resulting in over 650 individual footnotes.
