Double-weighted statement

This monograph fills a significant lacuna in research into early modern British music. Lawes was one of the most significant composers of the period; this book is the only complete and authoritative study of his autograph manuscripts and handwriting. It is also the first book since Lefkowitz’s 1960 study of the composer to examine all of Lawes’s instrumental music; it challenges many received opinions on chronology, compositional process and stylistic development. Moreover, the book situates Lawes within the socio-cultural context of the court of Charles I, offering new insights into court patronage and the role of music in court culture.
