Decreased osteogenesis, increased cell senescence and elevated Dickkopf-1 secretion in human fracture non union stromal cells.
This paper describes experimental studies which characterise for the first time the cellular pathology of non-union fracture in humans. The findings from this study have contributed to two ‘first in human’ clinical trials in the UK for the treatment of non-union fracture and cartilage repair with mesenchymal stem cells. These trials are supported by several large grants (European Union ‘MyJoint’ grant, Arthritis Research UK Programme grant 18480 and Tissue Engineering Centre of Excellence grant 19429) and will undoubtedly influence future clinical practice for the treatment of these orthopaedic pathologies.
