Highlighted on the June 2012 cover, this article featured in Supercond Sci Technol Highlights of 2012, builds directly on Glowacki’s pioneering work on superconductor ink-jet printing [Supercond Sci Technol 13(2000)584], by exploring the formation of single-layer and multifilamentary coatings for AC applications using sol-gel technology, achieving high Jc values. Parameters were defined to enable continuous YBCO coatings with lengths exceeding 100m by ink-jet printing on Ni–W substrates (by BASF, Michael Bäcker: baecker@d-nano.com). This international research was related to three EU-funded ink-jet projects and enabled establishment of the Transnational Energy Materials Printing Research Initiative (www.TEMPRI.eu).
