The origins of the English financial markets : investment and speculation before the south sea bubble
This monograph (110,000 words) involved the collection and analysis of a considerable body of manuscript and printed primary source material from a range of archive repositories. In particular, the author generated a database of more than 22,000 financial transactions which provided unique insights into the behaviour of investors in England’s early financial revolution. The monograph presented an extensive thesis concerning the emergence of the institutions upon which England’s financial system was built and provided the first comprehensive analysis of the operation of financial markets in the period prior to the South Sea Bubble.
