A complicated mammal: selected poems
b) Research input. The edition was designed to make a selection of work from a major modern Argentinian poet available to a broad English-speaking readership. Previously, only eight of Joaquín O. Giannuzzi’s poems had appeared in an unsatisfactory translation (2011) published in Argentina. While issued without critical apparatus, the selection and translation of a representative range of poems from Giannuzzi’s eleven collections and the options taken to address their challenges was informed by literary critical research into the poet’s oeuvre, the traditions of Argentinian literature, the work of Giannuzzi’s leading contemporaries, and the social and cultural context of twentieth-century Latin American poetry. Besides accessing contemporary articles and reviews and rare and out-of-print editions of Giannuzzi’s earlier collections in the national library at Buenos Aires, the translator sought further understanding through interviews undertaken with the poet Juan Gelman, the editor of Giannuzzi’s complete works and the editor of Argentina’s leading weekly literary review.
