Additional information

A predictive model was developed for the strongly-coupled processes of heat and moisture transport in concrete, processes which cause degradation. Validation was performed for a wide range of capabilities, from isothermal drying to high temperature scenarios. The work represents the output from an EU project (MAECENAS) on the modelling of ageing in nuclear power plant structures, but has broader applications, e.g. to fire engineering. An example is a subsequent safety study by the authors for Magnox on the effect of fire on concrete walls of vaults used to store magnesium alloy cladding from nuclear fuel rods (Contact: peter.c.minshall@magnoxsites.com).
