Additional information

Meta-proteomics is a key component of Systems Biology approaches in microbial ecology, but there are no standardized protocols for proteome purification or analysis from anaerobic digester sludge. This paper demonstrates meta-proteomics as a useful tool to uncover key bio-chemical pathways underpinning specific anaerobic bio-processes in anaerobic digesters. The paper provides direct evidence of pathways through identifying highly expressed proteins. The paper prompted a FEMS Microbiology Ecology invitation to write a review article (doi: 10.1111/j.1574-6941.2011.01284.x). It is providing a template for this approach in future research, and underpins current European Research Council (261330, 3C-BIOTECH; €1.5M) and EPSRC (RS57452; £1M) programmes.
