English abstract

The literature on Venetian navigation tends to focus on the state-regulated (and privileged) galleys, neglecting the substantial contribution of the private and coastal navigation. It thus not only gives a skewed image of Venetian navigation but also tends to misrepresent the role of state navigation as a demonstration of Venetian power and as a carrier of transfer-payments to the Mamluks, who were instrumental in securing a privileged position for Venetians in Egypt. Like free-riders, Venetian private navigation tried to profit from the performance of the galleys without contributing to the expenses and thus, ultimately, drove the system into collapse
