Das friderizianische Preußen (1740-1786) - eine moderne Ökonomie?
The paper reviews the development of Prussia under Frederick II ‘the Great’ (1713/42-86) in the light of current debates on what and whether there were ‘modern economies’ in the pre-modern age, what was ‘modern’ economic performance in the pre-industrial period, and whether Prussia under Frederick the Great witnessed any dynamic trajectories and developments that deserve to be called ‘modern’. It concludes that – contrary to some earlier accounts – there was not much to be found in eighteenth-century Prussian economic and social life that deserves to be called ‘modern’, and that a more pessimistic outlook on Prussian economic development is still warranted.
