Double-weighted statement

Knight Prisoner involves the research that would be usual in a monograph (350 texts cited with 18,000 words of footnotes, mostly with substantive content). The coverage is unusually broad, with sections on the Morte, the life and times of its author, and the reception of his work. However, the book’s major claim to originality rests on its combination of critical and creative material. The writing needed to be both carefully considered and stylistically effective – something which could only be achieved by frequent and intensive revision of the draft. The book represents the outcome of some five years’ work.
