THE USE OF LINKED SIMULATORS IN PROJECT “HORIZON”: RESEARCH INTO SEAFARER FATIGUE
This paper describes the full experimental design and preliminary results for the EU Project HORIZON. This project was the first ever use of linked bridge, engine and cargo control room simulators to study empirically the fatigue and performance levels of 40 watch keepers in a continuous experiment for 7 days on a 6hours on and 6 hours off watch regime. The experimental scenarios, methods for measuring fatigue and performance on task, and some of the problems in maintaining realism and measuring such “naturalistic” performance, are all described in full. Preliminary findings on the fatigue results are also outlined.
