This paper presents the most computationally-efficient method for analyzing AC loss in second-generation high-temperature superconducting coils. The method is very important for practical engineering applications of superconductors and the project was sponsored by Rolls Royce. The results obtained in this paper are used in a project sponsored by Chinese State Grid. This paper led to an EPSRC First Grant (EP/K01496X/1, £125k). It also led to an international collaboration commencing between Yuan and researchers at Florida State University and the AMES National Lab in the US.
