A genetic-algorithm-based approach for scheduling the renewal of railway track components
The paper describes a novel methodology using genetic-algorithms to synchronise, in a rational and cost effective manner, the renewal of railway track components so that the total costs of the renewal processes are minimised by reducing those associated with labour, equipment and the time required to take possession of the railway. The work’s significance is associated with the amount of money that can be saved for railway renewals by applying the proposed methodology. In the UK railway network, for example the application of the methodology to typical sections of the network would result in a cost saving of 17%.
