A novel application of a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm in open channel flow modelling
The novelty of the work lies in the ability to couple a numerical model (which accounts for the physics of the flow) with an evolutionary algorithm. The latter enabled an extensive database to be mined thus enabling the model to be calibrated for a variety of conditions. The impact of this work was subsequently demonstrated in an additional publication (doi:10.1111/j.1747-6593.2010.00223) where the model was shown to consistently outperform an expert user when predicting the conveyance capacity of a number of real rivers. Thus, the research has the potential to ease the day-to-day work of hydraulic engineers.
