Additional information

An international collaboration fostered by a £0.45M Major UKIERI grant uses world-class facilities at CGCRI, Kolkata to design and fabricate specialist optical fibre, explicitly to develop an inexpensive ‘all-fibre’ tuneable, stable, thulium-doped “all-fibre” laser, thereby obviating bulky, external tuning components. The high output power and narrow linewidth enable it to meet key requirements for compact, robust, low cost, spectroscopic-based sensor systems which are designed for use “in the field” for the first time, addressing directly the strong absorption in this spectral region of the target gas, CO2, allowing a short, few millimetre optical path to be used.
