Annotated English translation of Shudraka's classic ancient Sanskrit play.
Translation and contextualizing introduction are both by Sudipto Chatterjee. An early and unpublished version of the translated Sanskrit text formed the basis for an off-off- Broadway production of Mrcchakatika in 1991, directed by Vasilios Calitsis. This Norton edition is the first publication of Chatterjee’s translation and incorporates recent research as well as dramaturgical lessons learned from Calitsis’ production.
