Author publishes as Miller (maiden name). A novel route for synthesising self-assembling ionic-complementary peptides is presented; start with a solution containing soluble, easy to synthesize peptides, and simply add an enzyme to couple the precursor peptides together. This resulted in a sol-gel transition which made it possible to trigger gelation in the presence of cells, hence forming a 3D scaffold ready for tissue engineering applications. This method enables synthesis of ionic peptides without harsh chemicals and water as the only by-product. Moreover the materials are being trialled by clinicians for cardiac repair through an EU project.
