English abstract

This entry on the construction industry for the primary Italian academic reference encyclopaedia represents new research investigating the relationship between architecture and construction in several distinct architectural types.

The article analyses the coexistence of craft and industrial processes; industrialisation and standardisation; and ways of overcoming lack of coordination between contemporary and traditional design.

In Italy, the construction industry is the most important economic sector, in terms both of GDP and the number of employees. It is divided mainly into small or medium-sized companies and the management and production aspects are strongly characterised by a craft approach.
