Additional information

This paper was supported by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (PE 04511). It develops a robust classification scheme for anisotropic turbulence flows that is linked to fundamental principles in turbulence physics. Flows that are typically deemed similar are shown to be different. The implication is that turbulence closures that underpin computational fluid dynamics need rethinking. Ongoing work with colleagues at Duke, MIT, Minnesota and Western Australia is developing this further.
