Leach 2011 is the result of extensive ‘data gathering’ (reading, listening, looking) in the period 1995-2008. Machaut’s works are extensive and exist in multiple copies; as the book considers the entire output and its physical trace, they form a very considerable ‘data set’. Moreover, the book synthesizes, assesses, and responds to existing secondary scholarship on Machaut in several scholarly disciplines: history, art history, book history, French studies, English Studies, musicology. Reading facility was acquired in Middle and modern French, German, Latin, Dutch, and Italian. Reviews comment on the impressive scale and interdisciplinary nature of the book’s bibliography.
