Additional information
This work reports the application of the DSMC code, dsmcFoam, developed by Scanlon et al (Computers and Fluids. 39, 10, p. 2078-2089) to the field of microscale, rarefied gas dynamics. The research identified some non-intuitive flow behaviour where the addition of bends can actually lead to an increase in mass flow rate under certain conditions. Such effects can be taken advantage of in the design of micro electrical mechanical systems (MEMS) to enhance flow-rates. This research resulted with an invitation to deliver a special workshop in Open Source Particle Methods at the DSMC13 conference, Santa Fe, 2013. (magalli@sandia.gov).
