The three authors of this paper worked together on the study in the UK (Lucas’s visit funded by the British Academy) and in Brazil (during the trip on which the recordings were made). Leante contributed fully to the planning of the research, fieldwork and analysis: her distinctive contribution was to carry out the video analysis illustrated in figures 4, 10 and 21 which allowed the entrainment analysis to be contextualised within the ritual event.
