English abstract

Foreign direct investment has made France leaders in hotel and retailing and major players in finance and electricity. This study compares the social models in these industries in Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland and asks whether services FDI is ‘social dumping’ to avoid a tighter regulatory regime in France and whether it led to coercive comparisons tending to weaken the French social model ? These findings suggest not. Service investments aim to increase market share, so while French multinationals maximise profits and have not encouraged sector collective bargaining, where workplace unions already existed they recognised them and participated in social dialogue.
