It consists of over 226,000 words and is based on extensive research in little-known areas of print publication, manuscript and state papers, and fully interdisciplinary in its use of historical as well as literary sources, it provides historical perspective on twenty-first century questions about nationalism and state-formation (e.g. Anglo-Irish relations, status of the six counties of N. Ireland, Welsh devolution, the Scottish independence referendum).
