Additional information

This paper solved the problem of existence of an output feedback sliding mode controller for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) continuous systems of arbitrary relative degree. The paradigm was subsequently extended to sampled implementations by Floquet (Ecole Centrale de Lille) and Spurgeon and results were presented at major international control conferences (IFAC World Congress, IEEE CDC and European Control Conference). The work resulted in Floquet and Spurgeon collaborating on a European project, SYSIASS (SYStème Intelligent et Autonome d’aide aux Soins de Santé, http://www.sysiass.eu/), to develop the control system for an intelligent wheelchair with French and UK academic and healthcare sector partners.
