Additional information

This paper describes a novel biomimetic mechanical fin as actuators for underwater vehicles. The proposed fish swimming mode has a big advantage over the traditional underwater vehicle technologies due to its high maneuverability and efficient operation in cluttered environments. The uniqueness of this device is that it is designed using an orthogonal experimental design method, whether under the full control of the experimenter or not. The work was developed through an academic visiting program funded by China Scholarship Council. The work has led to a successful funding bid from NSFC (grant no. 61273347) for further international collaborations with Lancaster.
