Additional information

Together with a companion publication (Hassan et al, 2008, DOI: 10.1111/j.1467-7652.2008.00354.x) this paper is “proof of principle” of the use of tobacco roots as a future means of large scale protein production. The minimum force required to release the product from roots was established, minimising debris formation and reducing downstream processing cost. This is important in light of the global need for replacing usage of tobacco crops in sustainable economies and is a demonstration of the use of USD Technologies impact case study outputs in new areas. The work was in collaboration with St George’s Hospital (Prof Julian Ma, jma@sgul.ac.uk).
