Additional information

The complexity of a mixed integer-discrete optimisation problem with an FE simulation in the loop (as found in the design of composite aircraft wings) means the system is not solvable by existing means. This paper presents a new method to reduce this complexity to a manageable level. This work has lead to the involvement in the EU project "Advanced lattice Structures for Composite Airframes" (AlaSCA, No. 265881, € 3,431,752) in partnership with EADS, Airbus, TU Delft amongst others.
