This paper won the Sugden Prize from the Combustion Institute for being the paper with at least one UK author that made the most significant contribution to combustion research in 2011. The research reported led to grants from TSB (SYMPHONY project, TP11/HVM/6/I/AB201K, Cambridge grant value GBP330k), Rolls-Royce (RG62954, GBP116k) and EC (RECORD project FP7-AAT-2012-RTD-1, Cambridge grant value GBP250k). These grants are to enable the extension of the paper's findings to the prediction the broad-band noise of gas turbine combustors.
