Responses to, and the short and long-term impacts of, the 1957/1958 Capelinhos volcanic eruption and associated earthquake activity on Faial, Azores
This important Surtseyan eruption and earthquake, were carefully recorded at the time of their volcanology/seismology. Because of the secretive nature of the Salazarist dictatorship, responses to these events were, however, never fully recorded. This paper uses a mixture of data sources which include: archives; contemporary printed sources; interviews with people affected; reports in newspapers of record and film evidence. This paper was used to support a successful grant application to the British Academy, to study responses to earthquakes and eruptions since the Azores were first settled in the fifteenth century.
