The British ‘B’ Film
The 150,000 word book, co-authored with Brian McFarlane (Monash University) is the first history of these films and their production contexts, and the product of extensive and lengthy research over three years. It involved sourcing and watching approximately 300 films and culling information from BFI special collections and approximately 6,350 trade and fan magazines: Kinematograph Weekly 1940-65 (1,500 issues), The Cinema/Daily Cinema 1942-62 (3,000 issues), Cinema Studio 1948-53 (100 issues), Picturegoer and Picture Show 1940-60 (1,750 issues). In addition, approximately 60 monographs, film industry biographies/autobiographies and works of cultural history were used as sources.
