<02>This is the first paper that applied Lie group and Lie algebra to an industrial device particularly in the field of compliant mechanisms and that applied academic study to this type of devices. The paper is a direct result of a Knowledge Transfer Program and collaboration with the Lego company and resulted in a joint award of a key international collaboration project by Royal Society and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and an Innovative China UK project. The work further led to a Chinese patent and resulted in further joint publications in ASME transactions, mechanism and machine theory.
