This paper uses Bayesian solutions to five progressively difficult problems to question the need to extend Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) to solve such problems, arguing that the different paradigms are analogous to different languages for articulating the fundamental ideas. Funded as part of a £3M MoD project, “Detection and Identification of Difficult Targets”. A response to a previous special issue of the journal on a non-Bayesian paradigm for handling uncertainty. Provided a significant input into an important (classified) Dstl project (contact: Paul Thomas, pathomas@mail.dstl.gov.uk).
