Additional information

This paper describes successful defibrillation using shocks one tenth of the magnitude of conventional devices, minimising side effects and allowing broader use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. The work was collaborative between Liverpool (Morgan, Biktasheva, Biktashev) and Medical University of Graz, Austria (Plank). Underpinning research was supported by grants from: Liverpool University (RDF 4431, Biktasheva), Royal Society (2005/R4, Biktashev), EPSRC responsive mode (EP/D500338/1 Biktashev, Biktasheva), Austrian Science Fund (FWF F3210-N18, Plank). Outcomes: PhD award to Morgan, and award of three linked EPSRC HPC grants EP/I029664/1 (Biktashev,Biktasheva), EP/I029826/1 (Zhang, Manchester), EP/I030158/1(Bull, Edinburgh).
