This paper describes the behaviour and design method of a novel type of composite columns first investigated by the authors in utilising the elliptical hollow sections. The key mechanisms of its behaviour are explained in details. The findings of this research work funded by two EPSRC projects formed the backbone to the next revision of the EN1994-1-1.
