Additional information

The paper was the Winner of the International Water Association’s biennial prize for Research Excellence in Support of Sustainable Urban Water Management awarded in September 2008. It addresses the concepts of sustainability assessment illustrating how multi-criteria decision support systems can enhance the assessment of the relative sustainability of options when decisions are being made about wastewater asset investment. The paper is based on the findings of the Sustainable Water Industry Asset Resource Decisions (SWARD) EPSRC research project that devised a flexible and adaptable framework of decision support processes that can be used to include the sustainability principles more effectively.
