English abstract

‘La juste cause de la guerre’: This chapter analyses Russian war films since the collapse of the Soviet state, arguing that whereas films about the Second World War maintain the Soviet ‘brand’ by emphasizing the justness of the cause and the self-sacrifices of the people, those about more recent wars such as Afghanistan and Chechnya reveal the rupture between army and society. This rupture can be conceptualized as a crisis of identity in a post-imperial world, where old certainties have vanished and relationships with non-Christian neighbours provide insights into prevailing prejudices and pre-conceptions.
