Additional information
The effect of statistical wall roughness on the acoustic field in a pipe/borehole made of an elastic material is treated analytically for the first time. The impact of this work is that it is now possible to invert the wall roughness characteristics from the knowledge of the dispersion relations in a pipe. The results have helped to design novel instrumentation for the rapid acoustic characterisation of conditions in underground pipes. This work is now exploited by Acoustic Sensing Technology (UK) Limited (No. 08301004).
