A spatiotemporal statistical atlas of motion for the quantification of abnormal myocardial tissue velocities
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a treatment strategy in cardiac electrophysiology with <70% success rate and costs of over £15k per device, so effective patient selection is critical. This paper presents a novel image-based patient selection paradigm classifying myocardial contraction patterns using a spatio-temporal statistical atlas. The method integrates knowledge on the physiological mechanisms leading to myocardial asynchrony, which sets it apart from competing approaches. As a result the PhD thesis of the leading author received a Young Investigator Award from the European Society of Cardiology at EuroEcho2010.
